Grading

Letter grades are based on the percentage of points received out of a total number of points possible. Grades will be determined on the following point percentage system: 92-100 A, 85-91 B, 77-84 C, 70-76 D, 0-69 F. You can review your grade standing at any time by checking your “My Grades” link in MUOnline. Tests, quizzes, exercises and assignments will be graded and returned to you as soon as practical–usually the next class meeting for on campus classes and within a week for online courses.

If you have 100% attendance, are punctual, meet deadlines and complete all work in an acceptable manner you should expect a grade of C; if you do the work well, a B; and if you do it really well, an A.

  • The grade of A is awarded for outstanding work. Such work shows great initiative, resourcefulness and conscientious execution.
  • The grade of B is awarded to excellent work that is clearly above average, reflects good choice of topic/subject and is something special.
  • The grade of C is for average work that meets all assignment requirements and is accurate, neat and error free.
  • The grade of D is for poor work that fails to meet requirements, and/or includes some errors and/or demonstrates carelessness, incompleteness or sloppiness.
  • The grade of F is given for unacceptable work that is far short of requirements, is superficial, is late or shows minimal effort.

I include specific grading criteria in the syllabus for each course.

My Responsibility Statement

You, as future journalists, editors, strategic communications practitioners and managers are influencers and leaders of other people. Therefore, you must appreciate that talking across (and about) race, gender, class, geography, age, sexual orientation and other differences requires an awareness of those differences deeper perhaps than the average person possesses.
